Student Success in Visualise Your Thesis Competition
Riddet Institute PhD scholar Aylin Sen was Runner Up & People’s Choice in the Massey University Visualise Your Thesis (VYT) Competition 2021 last week.
Aylin’s entry was all about unlocking the potential of planted based emulsifiers for new food products. The judges were impressed with her engaging graphics, her explanation of the concept and her choice of easily understandable language for a non-scientific audience.
Aylin commented that during this experience, she has learned how important it is to communicate my research to a wider audience. “Thinking in simpler terms and channeling ideas to be expressed quickly, paved the way for new skills in my career. The new pathways I used are as simple as explaining my research to my mom and as complicated as submitting a video abstract for a journal. It was a great experience that highlighted my creativity and gave me the confidence to achieve more”, she says.
Visualise Your Thesis is creative storytelling at its best. Doctoral students present and showcase their research using digital communication to effectively communicate complex ideas to a non-specialist audience in one minute. The competition was developed by the University of Melbourne in 2016 and since then has grown to become an international competition.
