International collaboration with Chinese Academy of Sciences
The Riddet Institute is pleased to announce a formal agreement and research collaboration with the Chinese National Academy of Foods Centre in Beijing. A collaborative research programme and formal New Zealand China collaboration has been agreed.
Distinguished Professor Paul Moughan, Riddet Institute and Massey University, visited the academy earlier this year to meet some of the 639 staff and 963 scientists. Under the auspices of the prestigious China visiting experts scheme, he advised the Academy on new approaches to determining dietary protein quality in foods for humans. This technology is much needed by China to ensure future food and nutritional security for its people.
“The Academy is very impressive,” said Prof Moughan “with highly trained staff and exceptional laboratory facilities, grain and cereal processing pilot plants and first class analytical laboratories. The collaborative research programme and formal agreement will lead to a number of staff from the academy furthering their training either at Post-Doctoral or PhD level at Massey University.”
The Academy expressed a strong interest in becoming part of the Riddet Institute led International Proteos project and they are committed to providing data to the Proteos database on the protein quality of Chinese foods. During the visit, signing of a Memorandum of Understanding for collaboration between the Academy and the Riddet Institute took place.
Prof Harjinder Singh, Riddet Institute Director said, “This exciting formal research collaboration in China furthers our strong scientific alliance with that nation. The arrangement also gives further impetus to the Institute’s international collaboration, Proteos. This will lead to staff exchanges and Chinese scholars conducting research with the Riddet Institute.”
